Switching health insurer for 2027

2027 premiums rise by 5% on average. Basic insurance benefits are the same with every insurer: switching costs you none of your cover. Here are the deadlines, the steps and the pitfalls, according to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

The timeline

One date matters more than the others: 30 November, when your insurer must have received your cancellation.

31 October 2026
Last day for your insurer to tell you your 2027 premium (two months before it takes effect).
15 November 2026
Sending date recommended by the FOPH: registered letter or A-Mail Plus, to keep a safety margin.
30 November 2026
DeadlineYour cancellation must be received by your insurer: the date of receipt counts, not the date of sending. Same deadline to lower your deductible or change insurance model.
31 December 2026
Last day to request a higher deductible in writing. Overdue premiums for which you received a reminder must be paid by this day, otherwise you cannot leave your insurer.
1 January 2027
You are insured with your new insurer, with no break in cover.

Three steps, in this order

You can do it all yourself, with the template letters on priminfo.admin.ch, or leave the switch to us.

  1. Compare and choose

Compare 2027 premiums for your postcode, deductible and model: free choice of doctor, family doctor, telemedicine, pharmacy or flexible model. The benefits are the same; only the premium changes.

Do you work at least 8 hours a week for the same employer? Your employer already insures you against accidents: exclude accident cover and your premium goes down.

  2. Cancel your current insurer

A signed letter that must arrive by 30 November at the latest. Give your policy number and every person concerned.

Cancel only the basic insurance: your supplementary insurance can stay where it is.

  3. Join the new insurer

Send it the application form stating the deductible, the model and a start date of 1 January 2027. It must accept you, with no reservation and no health questionnaire.

Your former insurer releases you as soon as the new one confirms your membership: you stay insured without interruption.

Pitfalls to avoid

Four situations in which a switch can fail or cost more than expected.

Supplementary insurance

Different rules apply: the new insurer may ask for a health questionnaire, or refuse you. Cancel a supplementary policy only once you have been accepted elsewhere, and respect the notice periods in its terms and conditions.

Leaving an insurer's basic insurance allows it neither to cancel your supplementary policies nor to make you cancel them.

Overdue premiums

Premiums, cost-sharing or late-payment interest for which you received a reminder by 30 November, or debt collection costs: if they are unpaid on 31 December, you stay with your insurer.

An insurer that does not reply

If the insurer you chose does not respond to your application, or wants to impose another deductible, the FOPH advises sending it the application by registered letter, stating the deductible you want and the start date.

Switching during the year

Possible on 1 July only with the ordinary deductible (300 francs, 0 francs for a child) and free choice of doctor, if your insurer receives the cancellation by 31 March. With an optional deductible or a model with limited choice, you can only switch insurer on 1 January.

Frequently asked questions

Can the new insurer refuse me?

No, not for basic insurance. Every insurer operating in your canton must accept you, whatever your age and state of health, with no reservation, no waiting period and no health questionnaire. This does not apply to supplementary insurance.

Will my cover be worse?

No. Basic insurance benefits are set by law and are identical with every insurer. What differs: the premium, the service and the models offered.

I missed 30 November: what now?

You stay with your insurer in 2027, but you can still move to a higher deductible until 31 December. With the ordinary deductible and free choice of doctor, a switch on 1 July 2027 is still possible if your insurer receives the cancellation by 31 March 2027.

How does the whole family switch?

Each person has their own contract. A single letter can cancel them all if it names each person with their date of birth and policy number: each adult signs for themselves, and parents sign for their minor children. The family does not have to be insured with the same insurer.

What does Insurion's help cost?

Nothing for you. As an insurance intermediary registered with FINMA, Insurion is paid by the insurer you choose: at most 70 francs per basic insurance contract, a cap set by the insurers' industry agreement. Your premium is the same as if you went directly to the insurer.
